History

The Trentham Heritage Project recently launched a leaflet featuring three interconnected walking trails to highlight Trentham’s rich past.

To many people, the mention of Trentham conjures memories of trips to the gardens, with dips in the swimming pool, rides on the miniature railway and dances in the ballroom. Today, it remains a very popular leisure destination.

What will you find?

But beyond the perimeter of the gardens, there are other buildings, past and present, to discover. Lost buildings include one school, one vicarage, two railway stations and three bridges. Walks also pass the Sutherland Mausoleum, the only Grade I listed building in the city, and a Police Station that was once a bank before becoming a café bar.

One walk follows the route of the former branch line to Trentham Gardens. It carried visitors from 1910, but during World War II, it was vital to the war effort, transporting millions of cheques to the Central Clearing House, located in the ballroom in the gardens.

The Trentham Heritage group hopes the leaflet will prompt residents and visitors to explore the streets and footpaths, discovering traces of Trentham they hadn't noticed before or known existed.

Where to find more?

Leaflets can be picked up at many local outlets or viewed and downloaded from the Trentham Heritage Project website. Additional images and information on places included in the walks are also available, so you can take a virtual walk without leaving home.

After exploring Trentham, why not visit World Of Wedgwood or The Potteries Museum, where you can learn about Stoke-on-Trent’s rich pottery history. You can also learn about the process of making pottery through guided factory tours or have a go yourself and make a pot!
