Sir Francis Drake’s Journey: The World Encompassed
When Francis Drake set sail from Plymouth on 15th November 1577, he took with him four viol players. They played to accompany Drake’s private worship; they entertained him while he ate, and he used them to impress the natives.
Fretwork commissioned Orlando Gough to use these scant facts to create a journey in sound and words that charts Drake’s remarkable feat. Gough’s music and 16th century music is woven seamlessly together with a narrative drawn from contemporary accounts into a through-composed piece lasting 90 minutes. The result is a musical and literary narrative of one of the most significant achievements of the English golden age and an evocation of the earliest musical encounters between east and west.
