Staffordshire Hoard comes to Stoke-on-Trent
From 13th February to 7th March 2010 The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery hosted a display of 80 pieces from the largest ever-find of Anglo-Saxon treasure, The Staffordshire Hoard. The display proved so popular that a second display of 61 pieces is now going to continue for an indefinate period and a further nineteen new artefacts have also just been put on display taking the number of items on display back up to 80. The new items demonstrate the scope of the incredible collection . We have finely designed filligree gold hilt collars from ancient swords and a gold mount featuring the shape of the birds head.
Entry into the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and the Staffordshire Hoard exhibition is free of charge.
A £3.3m price tag has been placed on the Staffordshire Hoard at an independent valuation and has been accepted by the two councils of Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham City Council, who have been raising the funds to acquire it. The collection is 1,800 gold and some silver Anglo-Saxon artefacts and the amount makes the Staffordshire Hoard the most valuable treasure find ever.
The National Heritage Memorial Fund has announced that they will give a grant of £1.285 million to save the Hoard for the Nation. This means that the treasure will undergo a period of research and conservation before going on permanent display in Birmingham and Stoke-on-Trent.
The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery has collection boxes for public donations, as well as "The Staffordshire Hoard" book for sale published by the British Museum Press, with £1.00 of its £4.99 cover price now going to raise money for vital conservation and research work.
